Tromsø The Essential

The backdrop of the "capital" of north Norway is unique and accounts for the arctic city's ever-growing appeal, with more and more visitors coming each year. Tromsøya is an island encircled by blue-tinged, snow-capped mountains that reflect the strange Arctic light that bathes the calm waters of the strait in sparkling silver and shrouds this sublime scenery in an almost surreal veil. Tromsø's other trump card is that it is lively: from autumn to spring the city is taken over by students, who bring to life the streets, cafés and countless nightclubs, the neon lights of which rival the Northern Lights.
