Castro Marim
Castro Marim The Essential
With its back up against a height that dominates the low, ochre-coloured swampy plain of the Guadiana, in the Gulf of Cadiz, Castro Marim occupies a strong position facing the Spanish town of Ayamonte. The town which was in existence in the Roman era, in 1321, became at the time of the dissolution of the Order of the Templars in Portugal, the seat of Knights of Christ before its transfer to Tomar. To the north of the town stand the ruins of the fortified castle.
