Guarda The Essential
Situated at a height of 1,000m Guarda is the highest town in Portugal. Its name "guardian" recalls its role as the main fortified place in the province of Beira Alta, near Spain. Surrounded by medieval citadels and fortresses spread along the border, the town has developed over the last few years. The modern districts encircle the medieval town centre marked out by the remains of the old fortifications.
