Porto Moniz The Essential
The only sheltered port on the north coast, is protected by a flat strip of land which stretches towards a round island, the ilheu Mole where fishermens' cottages are built. Up until 1980, whaling was still practised here. To the north of the village, the coast is dotted with pointed reefs in which there is a sea-water swimming pool/ After Porto Moniz, the road rises in a zigzag fashion up the steep slope of the cliff which dominates the village.
This is the abridged name of Santa Maria
