Avis The Essential
On the monotonous crossing of the Alentejo, where cork oaks and the olive trees predominate, Avis is a town that has preserved the remains of its fortifications. As well as the walls, some medieval towers and the church of the monastery of São Bento bear witness to its glorious past. It was here that at the start of the 13C the military Order was set up in 1147 by Afonso Henriques to fight the Moors. This Order, the oldest in Europe, became the Order of St Benedict of Avis.
