Crato The Essential
From 1350 Crato was the seat of a priory of the Order of the Hospitallers of St-John-of-Jerusalem that then became the Order of Malta. The most famous prior was Antonio Portugal, grandson of King Manuel and bastard son of the Infante Louis. In 1356, the residence of the knights was transferred to the fortress-monastery at Flor da Rosa, but Crato kept its role as a priory. Although the castle was burned down in 1662, you can still see some old houses.
