Alba Iulia (Karlsburg/Gyulafehérvár) The Essential
Once the Roman town of Apulum, this is the city where union between Transylvania and Romania was declared on 1 December 1918, and as such symbolises national unity. In 1600-1601 it witnessed the first attempt at unity under Michael the Brave. The coronation of Ferdinand and Mary on 22 October 1922 in its Orthodox Reunification cathedral (built just for the event) increased Romanian affection for the city. Don't miss the cathedral of St Michael and the Alba Carolina citadel fortifications.
