Târgoviste The Essential
The capital of Wallachia from 1418 to 1659, Târgoviste has fine traces of its rich past: palaces, churches and monasteries built by the voivods, plus the all-brick princely court where they resided. The city centre lies between Boulevard Libertatii and Boulevard Mircea cel Batrân, at the end of which are modern blocks. Relax in the central park, then head into old Târgoviste along Alexandru I Cuza Street. Near the station (1883) is the wall where the Ceaucescus were executed in 1989.
