The Banat

Hungarians, Turks and Austrians, who prior to the First World War held this region on the Serbian border, have naturally left their mark here, most notably in Timisoara, the regional "capital", but also in its villages which retain a strong cultural identity. Lovers of wild landscape and winter sports will appreciate the Semenic mountains dotted with ski resorts, and the Danube gorge which is renowned for the spectacular Iron Gates.
