La Carolina
The Essential
Situated 10km south of the Parque Natural de Despeñaperros, La Carolina owes its name to the Sierra Morena settlement initiative of Carlos III (1767), which made this town the hub of a number of communities scattered across the mountain. In Calle Jardines a few of the original "colonial" houses remain and the statue of Saint John of the Cross, erected on Plaza del General Moscardó, serves as a reminder that he once lived in the town. The Museum of the Mining History of the Jaén Settlements presents the natural environment of the region of Despeñaperros before tracing back its history in an educational way, from Roman times (Cástulo) to the present day.
