Banyoles The Essential
Banyoles is the main town in a newly created "comarca" (local region) on the eastern bank of a lake which is a venue for major water sports competitions. The town grew around the former Sant Esteve monastery. This neo-Classical building still retains the Gothic doors of the original church as well as a Gothic altarpiece of the Mare de Déu de l'Escala, by Joan Antigó, who was known as the Master of Banyoles.
