The ramparts of the monastery, crowned with crenellations and pinnacles, rise darkly above the village, a huddle of brown-tiled houses. This monastery was a major pilgrimage destination in the 16C and 17C and the symbol of "Hispanidad": as an example Columbus named one of the West Indian islands Guadalupe (nowadays known as Guadeloupe). It was on this island that the first converted Indians were baptised.
