Roncesvalles The Essential
A border pass used in the Middle Ages by pilgrims heading to Santiago de Compostela, Roncesvalles is famous for the 778 victory of the Basques of Navarre over the rearguard of Charlemagne's army as it was returning to France on the orders of Roland. This legend was idealised on both sides of the Pyrenees, glorifying either the Basques or the Christians. Today, the inhabitants of this hamlet accommodate pilgrims in their collegiate church after they have crossed the Pyrenees. The three valleys of Navarre, which extend to the east of the monastery, offer an excellent opportunity to explore all the untouched beauty of the foothills of the Navarre Pyrenees.
