Sant Mateu The Essential
Interesting
The historic capital of the Maeztrazgo, Sant Mateu was granted to the Military Order of Montesa in 1319 and grew rich thanks to the wool trade. It entered into the history books once and for all when, on 15 August 1429, Clement VIII renounced his pontificate in the church here (thereby ending schism in the West). The heart of the town is the Plaza Mayor, which is surrounded by porticoed houses, some very old. In Calle Historiador Betí, there are several fine Gothic palaces from the 15C, and a 14C oven.
