The unique quality of light on the island of Tjörn inspired numerous late-19C painters such as Karl Nordström (Varberg School), Ragnar Sandberg and Ivan Ivarssonet (Göteborg group). Its west coast is scattered with typical fishing villages, where red-painted boat sheds stand in rows along the port, and a labyrinthine streets wind between the tightly-packed white houses. Skärhamn, Tjörn's main town, has a Marine Museum.
