Fribourg occupies an outstanding site, on a headland encircled by a loop in the Sarine. The old quarter, set between the river and upper town, is spiked with steeples and has retained a Medieval appearance. Fribourg, founded in 1157, has remained a deeply Catholic town. Its world-famous university (1889) is a cultural centre and has strengthened the leading role of religious education here. Also, Fribourg holds a triennial international photography exhibition.
