Lucerne The Essential
This famous tourist resort lies at the northwestern end of Lake Lucerne. The Old Town is built against the mountainside where there are remains of fortifications. The first fishing village grew when the Gothard route opened in the 13C, then the town became a Catholic stronghold. In 1574, the Jesuits opened their first school in German-speaking Switzerland here.
