Under British rule since the treaty of Utrecht in 1713, this territory of 30,000 inhabitants is 4.5km long, 1.4km at its widest point and 426m high. Of course, it is the rock itself which made Gibraltar famous - this extraordinary limestone peak towers above the sea and is visible from every corner of the bay. The nearer you get, the more you are struck by its size and beauty. Its upper part, a protected nature reserve, is one of the most attractive parts of Gibraltar.
