This old fortress, which has dominated the local landscape here since the 11C, has given its name to this village with its harmonious houses crowned by Purbeck stone roofs. It prides itself on having the smallest town hall in England. The castle, accessible from the village or the visitor centre on the Wareham road, is in ruins.
