Georgian façades hide the ancient buildings of a town which in 1377 had 5 000 inhabitants (half the population of York and twice that of Hull). Behind its 1832 façade, the Guildhall (1762) has a very fine courtroom, with a majestic stucco ceiling by Cortese.
