Rye The Essential

This delightful little hillside town and its multitude of red-roofed houses, stretching up to a squat church, can be seen from afar. Centuries of genteel decline have not detracted from Rye's charming townscape, its medieval fabric often sporting a Georgian exterior. Rye retains its small port, though the sea's retreat has left the town 3km inland. The old town gives onto the surrounding landscape in spectacular fashion; nearby Bodiam Castle overlooks the River Rother.
