England's most northerly town is part of Northumberland, a historic county of castles and battlefields bearing witness to age-old conflicts between the English and the Scots. Between 1147 and 1482, the town changed hands no less than 13 times! Berwick has some remarkable 16C fortifications, which ironically have never been required, meaning that they have survived entirely intact.
