Shrewsbury
Shrewsbury The Essential
Shrewsbury was once the capital of the Welsh dominions of Powis and grew up in the Middle Ages around its Norman castle, built by Roger de Montgomery in 1083 to defend the loop in the River Severn. Today, the town has elegant Georgian and Queen Anne buildings, many "black and white" houses and attractive medieval dead ends and alleyways, locally called "shuts".Shrewsbury is the naturalist Charles Darwin's (1809-1882) birthplace.
