Devizes
Devizes The Essential
Devizes grew up around an early Norman castle (1120), destroyed by Cromwell in 1646. The present castle is a 19C pastiche. From the Middle Ages to the 19C, the town prospered thanks to the clothing industry and woollens trade. Devizes also benefited from tobacco processing in the 17C. Today, it is probably better known for its breweries than its proliferation of well-preserved town houses (18C).
