The Essential
A market cross, one of the finest in England, stands in the centre of this market town's square. It was built of local stone in 1490 and stands 12m high; a riot of buttresses, pinnacles, crenulations and arches, with a spire crowning a high pinnacle and cross. Malmesbury was a prosperous weaving town until the 18C.
