York City Art Gallery

The York City Art Gallery contains a vast collection of paintings from 1350 to the present day, with many portraits and studies of nudes by William Etty (1787-1849), a York-born painter. Through his superb use of colour, his depiction of long, slender and sensual bodies and movement, and his unique staging, his nudes are close to those by the French painter Théodore Chassériau.
