Fraserburgh The Essential
The heyday of herring fishing was during the 19C and early 20C, but this austere town standing at the northeastern tip of Aberdeenshire is still the home port for around one hundred fishing boats. The first harbour was founded by the Fraser family in the 16C, who also built the residence on Kinneard Head. Ambitiously called a castle, its top floor was converted into Scotland's first lighthouse in 1787.
