Castle Douglas

The Essential
Located to the north of Loch Carlingwark, this inland market town has an auctioneering operation and serves the area's farming industry. The town acquired its perpendicular layout in the 18C. Its name also dates from that period, in honour of a local merchant, Sir William Douglas (1745-1809), who made his fortune in the West Indies, before acquiring land in the area and creating the town's cotton industry.
