Kirkcudbright The Essential
Standing on the eastern banks of the River Dee, Kirkcudbright today thrives on agriculture, fishing and tourism. The seafront was once a harbour and the town a royal burgh. It was also a county town for the "Stewartry", Crown lands administered by a "Stewart". This administrative status remains in existence today and this is the last example to survive in Scotland (the present holder of the office is the Prince of Wales).
