The Essential
Kirkcaldy is both a holiday resort and industrial town. In the 19C it was famous for its linoleum factories, and this activity is still part of its varied industrial output. The annual Links Market, founded in 1305, is now a funfair and is held on the 1.6km-long promenade. The economist Adam Smith (1723-1790) and architect Robert Adam (1728-1792) were both born in Kirkcaldy.
