Greenock The Essential
James Watt (1736-1819), the steam engine pioneer, was born in this major shipbuilding centre. Behind the town is Lyle Hill, an excellent landmark offering a broad view of the Clyde estuary, from Helensburgh to Dunoon. Nearby is a memorial commemorating the Free French sailors who lost their lives between 1940 and 1945 (an intertwined cross of Lorraine and anchor).
