Stromness The Essential

Stromness is the second largest town on the main island of Orkney (Mainland) and a major fishing port. Originally a Viking settlement, it did not really develop until the 18C, when it became a trading post and the last port of call for Hudson's Bay Company ships, before concentrating on whaling and herring fishing. On the waterfront, the long and winding cobbled main street is lined by gabled houses with their own small piers.
