Lauder
Lauder The Essential
Lauder is a quiet royal burgh on the A68 leading to Edinburgh and the North. The town is known for an episode in Scottish history that left the 5th Earl of Angus, Archibald Douglas, with the nickname of "Bell the Cat". In 1482, a group of noblemen, jealous of some of James III's low-born advisers, had six of the king's favourites hanged from the bridge which formerly stood on the Thirlestane Castle estate.
