Betws-y-Coed (Chapel in the Woods), beautifully set amid wooded hills, has been the gateway to Snowdonia since the London-Holyhead trunk road (today's A5) was driven through North Wales. This popular mountain resort is built of stone from the surrounding hills and blends pleasantly into the landscape. Walking, skiing and climbing (more than 1 500 approved climbing routes) are the area's most popular activities.
