Northern Ireland's second city is virtually the only town in the United Kingdom to retain its old walls (17C), dating from the period when the old Irish settlement of Derry had its name changed to Londonderry. It was the scene of some tragic incidents during the Troubles ("Bloody Sunday" took place here in 1972). In recent years it has undergone a transformation thanks to economic regeneration, and its bustling commercial atmosphere is a pleasant backdrop for tourist visitors.
