Newcastle The Essential
This is one of Ireland's foremost seaside resorts; it began to develop in the early 19C when seaside holidays started to become fashionable. From its small harbour, visitors can walk along a promenade lined with hotels, shops and amusement arcades stretching in a northeasterly direction along a vast sandy beach overlooking Dundrum Bay. The listed course of the Royal County Down Golf Club lies behind the imposing red-brick Slieve Donard Hotel, built by the railway company in 1898.
