In addition to the Lower Saxony Gallery presenting a collection of paintings and sculptures, European works, from the Middle Ages to the 20C, the museum is home to an ethnography section (thematic exhibition in relation to New Guinea) and natural history section (aquarium). The prehistoric department presents reconstitutions teaching about the lifestyle of prehistoric peoples in Lower Saxony. Many objects dating from the iron age and a well-preserved human body are on show.
