New Guardhouse

The Neue Wache (New Guardhouse) is the most important work of art by the architect Schinkel (1816-18) in Berlin. Considered to be a masterpiece of the German Classical style, this monument has been the principal German memorial to "the victims of war and tyranny" since 1993. A replica of the moving sculpture by Käthe Kollwitz Mother with her Dead Son stands alone behind the Doric columns, illuminated by light falling vertically from above.
