Moncton The Essential
Set on a bend of the Petitcodiac River, Moncton is famous for its todal bore, which rushes up the river from the Bay of Fundy. Named after Robert Monckton, the British commander in the capture of Fort Beauséjour, the city is generally considered the capital of Acadie. The first settlers in the area were German and Dutch families from Pennsylvania, but they were joined by Acadians returning to British territory after Deportation. Today one-third of the population is French-speaking.
