This habitation (French word for "dwelling") is a replica of Canada's first European settlement of any permanence. The collection of dark, weathered, fortified buildings joined around a central courtyard was designed in a style reminiscent of 16C French farms by Samuel de Champlain (1567-1635), captain and navigator of the expedition of Sieur de Monts. Over the gateway entry hangs the coat of arms of France and Navarre, ruled by King Henry IV. A well with a shingled roof stands in the middle of the courtyard. Around it are the residences of the governor, priest and artisans. The kitchen, blacksmith's shop, community room where the Order met, and the chapel can be visited, as can the storerooms, wine cellar and trading room where Indians brought their furs. Each structure has a steeply pitched roof and, except for the storeroom, a fieldstone chimney. A building technique known as colombage, the term used in France for log-filled, wooden frame construction, was employed to form the walls. This construction can be appreciated only from the interior, since the exterior of the buildings is covered with lapped boarding.
