Lévis The Essential
The city of Lévis is located on the southern shore of the St. Lawrence, opposite Quebec City. Founded in 1769 as a British redoubt, Lévis became in the 19C a center for timber exports to England and later, a shipbuilding center. Today it is noted for its port, wood-related industries, and as the birthplace and headquarters of the Desjardins cooperative savings and loan company. A ferry connects Lévis to Quebec City just across the river.
