Bakersfield The Essential
Sprawling Bakersfield was founded in the 1860s when the discovery of gold in the Kern River brought settlers to the area. Irrigation from canal project led to rapid agricultural development in the late 19C. In the early 20C, petroleum production boomed in Kern County; machines continue to pump on the northern edge of the city.
