Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum

Built at a cost of $1 million on the site of Agricultural Park's motor speedway, the oval coliseum (1923, Parkinson & Parkinson) is Los Angeles' preeminent sports stadium, hosting college football games as well as international soccer competitions, rock concerts and a wide variety of other outdoor events. Adjoining it, the 16,000-seat turquoise Sports Arena, built in 1958, hosts basketball games and other indoor events. With its original 75,000-seat capacity then boosted to 105,000, the Coliseum became the world's largest arena of its day and gained international prominence as the site of the 1932 Summer Olympic Games. To mark its role as the principal venue of the 1984 Summer Games, an Olympic Arch was erected just outside the coliseum's eastern peristyle. A large bronze structure by sculptor Robert Graham, the arch depicts headless male and female nude figures atop a gateway of two piers.
