This thin, twin-towered building (Gio Ponti), faced in iridescent tile, is a modern fortress looming over Civic Center Plaza, with exhibits on seven vertically stacked, 10,000sq-ft gallery floors. A new wing (Daniel Libeskind), designed to resemble a blossoming flower of titanium, granite and glass, has nearly doubled existing space.Highlights of a renowned 17,000-item Native American Collection (2nd & 3rd floors) include an 1840s house panel from a southeast Alaskan Tlingit chief; a Salish spirit figure and an Iroquois war club, both from the mid-1850s; Plains Indian horse trappings from the 19C; and a modern Navajo sand painting.Maya, Aztec and Inca pieces contrast dramatically with European aesthetic in the Pre-Columbian and Spanish Colonial collections (4th floor). Asian Art (5th floor) includes Hindu sculptures, Islamic textiles and Japanese scrolls. European and American Art (6th floor) is organized thematically-landscapes in one area, portraits in another. Highlights include Monet's Waterloo Bridge (1903) and Warhol's Liz (1965). Western Art (7th floor) includes a casting of The Cheyenne (1901) widely regarded as the best Remington sculpture in existence.
