New London The Essential
Home to the US Coast Guard Academy, New London retains its historic ties to the sea. The deep-water port here was a haven for privateers during the Revolution, and made for an active whaling industry in the 19C. Elegant homes built from the profits of whaling, such as the four white Greek Revival mansions in Whale Oil Row, still stand in neighborhoods that have remained residential. Revitalization of the downtown area has included the renovation of several 19C houses on Starr Street, as well as the 19C Union Railroad Station.
