Smithsonian American Art Museum

Housed in the landmark Old Patent Office Building, this museum contains the country's oldest federal collections of art. Its holdings run the gamut of American art from early-18C portraiture and 19C landscapes to the free-form sculpture and large, abstract canvases of contemporary artists. Since 1968, the collection has increased fivefold and now includes more than 34,000 objects by more than 7,000 artists. The recently renovated museum features expanded galleries and the new Luce Center for American Art, an art storage and study facility that is open to the public.
