Garden District

Recommended
One of the best preserved historic districts in the US, this neighborhood boasts an unmatched assortment of antebellum mansions (Greek Revival and Italianate styles predominate) erected mostly for Anglo-Saxon newcomers to New Orleans in the mid-19C. Built in the center of large plots of land, the homes allow space for front "gardens" where exotics such as banana, bougainvillea, magnolia, crape myrtle and oleander still flourish. Prytania Street and the numbered streets leading from it to Magazine Street make for delightful wandering.
