Set on the south bank of the Severn River, Annapolis is known for its long history and its picturesque harbor, home to a pretty fleet of yachts and sailboats. The city was fouded in 1649 when Virginia Puritans established Arundel Towne along the Severn; renamed in honor of England's Queen Anne, it became the seat of colonial government in 1695. In the 18C Annapolis reigned as Maryland's premier port; today it is home to the US Naval Academy.
