Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA)
Spread out within the spacious, renovated interiors of a former factory, complete with a clock tower, this sprawling modern art campus provides space for large installations of contemporary art. The museum takes advantage of the intimate courtyards and vast wood-floored rooms of the 19C brick buildings to display works that have gone largely unseen because their size and weight had made exhibition impossible. The complex occupies a 13-acre site in downtown North Adams, making it the biggest center for contemporary visual and performing arts in the US to date—indeed, one of the 19 galleries measures the length of a football field (Building 5); another rises 40ft in height (Building 4).
