Soho

Recommended
The site of the first free black community on the island, this area was settled in 1644 by emancipated slaves of the Dutch West India Company. Today, Soho (an acronym for SOuth of HOuston Street) is the trendy heart of Downtown and also constitutes one of America's finest conservatories of cast-iron architecture with its tenement blocks adorned with elegant iron details. The haunt of artists in the 1960s, the neighborhood has since become far too pricey for their likes and is now a haven for hipsters.
